The international investigation has shown that prostheses and implants can be hazardous to our health!
250 journalists from 36 countries participated in this investigation.
The following implantable materials were examined:
- Insulin pumps,
- Pacemakers,
- Breast implants,
- Shoulder and knee joint prostheses.
The shocking report was published in November 2018 – there is a direct link between the increase of medical incidents (health problems) and the quality of implantable materials (aesthetic prostheses, implants for endoprosthetic, pacemakers). The results of the investigation show that all problems are caused by the absence of proper quality control of implants. Moreover, this problem is of current importance in all countries of the world, including developed European countries, such as, for example, England.
In the United States, 82000 deaths and more than 1.7 million health problems have been revealed due to the use of implants of poor quality in the past 10 years after exploring databases. However, the investigation shows that these figures are likely to be much higher.
Unfortunately, the processed data is not enough to find out precise causes of incidents and to make conclusions that are more reliable. It is so because of the data anonymization. Experts believe that things are much worse in reality, especially in those countries where medicine is not properly controlled.
In France, additional certification of doctors and clinics was organized and the implantable materials of different brands underwent additional examination after the implant scandal. By the way, in France, the doctor is obliged to report any problems that he finds with implants.
The successful result of the surgery is not only influenced by the quality of the implanted material, but also by a number of other factors. For example, in England, a large number of violations of sanitary standards were identified after private companies had started to clean operating units in clinics. The risk of infection in England is one of the highest in Europe, that is why many patients prefer to be operated on in other European countries, in particular, in France. The increased patient flow from the United Kingdom to France is caused not only by long operation waiting lists but also by sanitary aspects. The growth in medical travel also occurs due to the existence of a European directive, which obliges the state to compensate for the surgery cost if the surgery is performed in any other country of the European Union. Many British citizens do not miss this opportunity. Residents of the United Kingdom choose France not only for performing vitally important surgeries. Plastic surgery in France is also very popular. The advantages of plastic surgery in France are as follows:
- Lower costs,
- Natural results,
- Minimal risk of complications and infections.
Breast implants cause breast cancer
We had been assured for a long time that implants did not cause breast cancer, however, there were cases of anaplastic large-cell lymphoma (ALCL) after using implants. WHO even introduced the special term BIA-ALCL, which means the anaplastic lymphoma of large cells caused by the use of implants.
To date, ALCL cases are found quite rarely but their number is increasing every day. Timely detection allows to treat of this pathology successfully, otherwise, breast cancer may appear and the consequences may be irreversible.
French doctors blame macro textured implants. Therefore, the use of macrotexture implants is prohibited in France. In France, the doctor is responsible for each of his patients and he is not willing to expose them to additional risks using these implants. In many countries where the activities of the surgeons are not controlled, and where the doctor does not have any obligations to the patient macro textured implants are still used.
One of the most famous breast implant manufacturers is Allergan. After the breast implant scandal, Allergan was recommended to revise the production of macrotexture implants. Dr. Jean Louis Durand, a French plastic surgeon, does not use the implants of this brand, he prefers the brand Eurosilicone. The doctor does not explain the choice of implants to his patients but he says that he has more confidence in French manufacturers, especially after the Poly Implant Prothèse (PIP) scandal. Nowadays, the quality of implantable material in France is tightly controlled.
